In this opinion piece, we argue that India’s cities need a coordinated, mission-driven approach to road development — one that treats roads as public infrastructure for safety, accessibility, and climate resilience, not just as corridors for vehicles. We propose a national framework — a Pradhan Mantri Shahari Sadak Yojana — to bring design quality, lifecycle management, and dedicated funding to every city road, ensuring that our streets become truly inclusive for all citizens.
